5 Important Considerations To Check Before Purchasing Cat Food

5 Important considerations to check before purchasing cat food.Every cat owner wants that their kitty lives a healthy life free from any problems. But for this you need to ensure that she gets proper diet. You can ensure that by getting the right cat food. But what is the right cat food? With so many options available in the market it is important that you select the best one after taking a look at these important considerations:

Consider Getting Both Wet And Dry Food For Your Kitty

It is often suggested to get wet food for felines because they drink, while eating rather than drinking water separately. Ensure that there is approximately 70% moisture content in the product that you procure. Most of the canned food products for felines have more than 75% to 78% moisture content, but please scrutinize the details to be on the safer side. If you get serve 3/4th of canned food to your cat out of the complete diet it would be great for her. By serving her this food you can reduce the chances of urinary tract infections and diabetes. The remaining part needs to consist of dry food which is great for the teeth of the cat. Also ensure that your kitty has access to water at all times.

Check The Terms Mentioned On The Food Label

It is important that not all products are labeled as food. Remember, the ones that contain “formula” or “dinner” have lower concentration of the main ingredient. Even if the label says that the product comes with a specific ingredient the ingredient is usually in smaller amount irrespective of the bigger print.

The Nutritional Needs Of Your Kitty Needs To Be Met

Remember, proteins should be approximately 40% of the cat diet while fats in the food should be 1/3rd of it. This is the exact reason for which you need to verify that the cat food that you are selecting contains a high concentration of protein and sufficient amount of fat. But the level of carbohydrates in the food should be less than 50% and the main source of carbohydrates should come from rice and vegetables instead of corn meal. It is also important that the food contains the requisite amount of vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals, taurine and fiber.

The Cat Food Should Have A Good Source Of Protein

Chicken, fish and beef are considered to be good sources of protein, hence look for any one of these protein sources in the cat food. Also scrutinize the amount of meal contained in the diet. Many times manufacturers use proprietary amounts hence, it is better to check whether the protein source is the main ingredient in the cat food.

Buy Only Those Food That Contains Food Preservatives

Cat food contains vitamin C and vitamin E which are good for the overall health of felines. It is always better to for natural ingredients rather than going for artificial preservatives.

If your pet is facing any medical condition, consult your veterinarian before getting any type of cat food.

I love cats and in fact own one and so it is imperative for me to be vigilant about the cat food that I get for my kitty. During my tenure at VetSupply, I went through a lot of cat food and a thought struck in my mind that just like me other cat owners would also love to get some tips about the different things to consider before purchasing the cat food.

Tips on Entertaining Indoor Cats

Tips on Entertaining Indoor Cats

Tips on Entertaining Indoor Cats

Most cat lovers are advocates of interactive play with their pets. However, many of them cannot be around all the time. There are surefire ways to let your feline friends have fun, yet stay safe when you cannot be there to supervise them.

Adopt a Friend

Contrary to what other people say, cats are not loners. They are social animals that love to have a friend, especially when they are adopted with another as a youngster. Two cats can entertain one another when you are not present. They battle each other rather than focus on ripping your sofa.

Provide Cheap Pleasures

Cats don’t care about the money you spend on them. They can find entertainment in an empty box or paper bag. When you leave a ping pong ball in an empty bathtub, they will enjoy patting their paw. The tub also prevents them from booting under the furniture. Go for lightweight toys that make noise and are easy to bat around. Adding cat trees or tunnels keep cats occupied and enrich the surroundings. Give fresh catnip so your cat will have an all-time high. They will doze it off and stay away from your breakables.

Provide her with Kitty TV

DVDs and kitty channels offer lots of visual entertainment to cats. However, many cats would rather watch something real. Place a bird bath and some feeders close to your cat’s favorite lookout to have long hours of entertainment.

Different Kinds of Play

Social play is playing with other felines or humans. This could mean a tag game with siblings or grasping your toes. Kittens from 9 to 16 weeks of age are very active in social play, then this decreases afterward.

Object play is playing with toys. For cats, anything can be a toy, even the breakable fine china on your table. Their play behavior is stimulated by both sound and motion, and cats have the tendency to react eagerly to vertical movement to their line of vision.

Self-directed play is playing with themselves, like chasing their tail or pouncing on make-believe objects. This happens when they have no playmate, and as an alternative for social play.

Locomotory play is when the cat is simply in motion. This can include running solo and pouncing on make-believe targets, or involve others.

The bottom line is, cats play to have fun. It is normal for them to be serious about play time. Though some cats are more playful than others, all felines benefit from all the fun and play time in terms of physical and emotional well being. If you will travel, plan ahead and get special toys for your cat. This way, your kitty may even influence you to leave.

A Cat Tree Keeps Your Pet Occupied And Happy

Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article

No one wants to come home after a long day at work to find their sofa shredded by sharp claws along with picture frames and other items knocked off of shelves and onto the floor. By adding a cat tree to your house, you will be not only keeping your cat occupied and happy but also be helping to protect your possessions from damage. Here’s a fast introduction to one pet playground every feline owner needs to check out.

Cats Have Unique Needs

Keeping your pet in an environment where they don’t have access to a place for burning off their natural energy is not just unfair, but can also end up causing both you and your cat serious frustration. Kitties need to be able to climb, play, scratch and explore just like they would if they were living outdoors and if they don’t have somewhere to do so your couch, shelves, counter tops, and book cases will most likely be used as a substitute. This can end in disaster as not only can it be dangerous but many owners end up giving away their cat thinking that it is out of control, when all their pet really needed was their own spot to for their unique yet normal cat behaviors.

These Trees Are Better Than The Real Thing Outdoors

A cat tree is the simplest way to keep your feline busy. These are free-standing units that offer everything cats could dream of in the outdoors but of course designed to be used safely inside the home. They have multiple posts to be climbed and perches to be explored and slept on. Pets love to be high up giving them the feeling they are snoozing just like a wild cat would up in a tree. Plus, these trees unlike real ones normally include scratching posts to keep claws in great condition and curb the urge to scratch expensive furnishings. Many also include attached toys to keep kitty busy for hours on end with no mess involved.

Don’t Be Afraid To Go Big

Even though the average tree is full of fun, there are choices for owners who want to literally take it up a notch. A tall cat tree allows cats who love to climb the chance to go even higher while only taking up the same footprint as ones which are much shorter in height. This is fantastic as it makes a smart use of vertical space that otherwise would remain un-used. For even more activities and larger places to hide, sleep, and play a cat tree condo is the preferred choice for pampered pets whose owners want to keep them as satisfied as possible. These are a bigger and more intricate type of cat trees which are well known for tiring out and then providing your pet with a range of places to take a nap.

Responsible cat owners know that keeping their felines busy means keeping them happy. A cat tree will help keep your belongings from becoming the focus of your pet’s attention by giving it the ultimate multi-level playground. By adding one to your home, you’ll instantly be transforming your space into a cat friendly environment that is safe and fun.

Feline Kidney Disease: Yes,There Is Hope!

Feline Kidney disease: yes there is hope,

even though chronic kidney failure is an irreversible disease. The damage to the kidney cannot be fixed. Treatment goals for this form of kidney disease focus on slowing the progression of disease, in some cases for years. Kidney friendly wet food with modified levels of protein and phosphorous are considered key elements of treatment, as is maintaining hydration with subcutaneous fluids as needed.

I personally have had six of my own cats develop kidney disease and in all cases, they lived from several months to several years after the initial diagnosis. You can do a lot for your own cats as I did for mine. You don’t have to be a veterinarian to care for your kitty cat at home. CeCe lived comfortably for another 10 months with stage four kidney disease.

Kidney failure in cats is a scary and challenging disease.  Although the challenges can be daunting, as pet parents you should take heart that vigilance does pay off. As noted, many of my cats have lived a happy life for a long time after the initial diagnosis. TIP! Regular vet visits are very important for your cat’s health. They should go at least once yearly for a check-up, and more often if they need any shots.

Awareness of the clinical signs of kidney disease is also crucial to your cat’s long term health. Any changes in water intake or more trips to the litter box warrants a call to to your vet, as does weight loss, vomiting, and bad breath. In addition to kidney failure, these are also signs seen in another common cat disease, diabetes. In both cases, early intervention leads to a longer life. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian — they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.

Never give up hope! Merck’s Veterinary Manual states “With appropriate therapy, animals can survive for long periods with only a small fraction of functional renal tissue, perhaps 5-8% in dogs and cats.”

A Guide On Buying The Best Friendly Kidney Cat Food

A Guide On Buying The Best Friendly Kidney Cat Food

This guide helps you choose the best kidney friendly cat food for your cat. This is a very important decision. Cats are essential carnivores and therefore have a particularly great need for protein. Wet food is a very close reflection of what your cat would be eating if they were living in the wild, not exactly, they do eat their prey raw, but a close reflection. Wet food comes in many different sizes and although it’s a more expensive diet than the dry food diet, it provides your carnivore cat with its main dietary source, protein. Due to it’s high level of moisture and protein, premium wet food is the best cat food that you can feed your cat When choosing a wet cat food make sure to read the ingredients. If the list starts with fillers like corn, corn meal, wheat, or any other name than a specific protein, like chicken, lamb, duck, then look for another brand. Cats are carnivores, and therefore the best cat food for your cat is one that is filled with real meat, since it should be the main source in their diets.

When you really love your pet and have their best interest at heart, it just feels good to know you are feeding them the healthiest food you can. Now this may mean that you will have to spend a little more for this food than for the other mass produced foods on the shelf, but when health and happiness are important, it makes sense to pay for top quality. Plus, you will save money in the long run by having your pets remain healthy. As a Pet Parent it is your responsibility to keep up your pet’s health the best way you know how. Feeding your kitty cat healthy pet food, is equally as important as feeding yourself healthy human food.

Wet food is the only food you should feed your kitty cat. This is the single best decision you can make for your cat’s health and longevity!  Your Best Friend deserves only the Best Quality cat food!

I’m going for maximum quality of life, rather than simply extending life, which is what the kidney diets do.

Please  join me on this difficult journey.

Criteria for High Quality Kidney Cat Food

While you’ll see fancy labels on many brands that claim to be organic, holistic, or superior in some other way, the truth about any cat food’s quality is revealed in its ingredients list. A guide for high quality cat food should include:

  • Use named meat protein sources
  • Contain no by-products
  • Contain no fillers such as soy, wheat or corn.
  • Contains no artificial ingredients or preservatives

Since ingredients are listed by weight, a look at the first five ingredients in any brand will give you a good idea about its true quality. There’s little agreement about which brand of cat food is truly the best, and no single manufactured food offers perfect nutrition. However, these are the brands that I highly recommend based on my years of experience with all of my CKD cats. Continue reading

Pet Insurance and Pet Savings Accounts

Planning for Pet Emergencies: Having Pet Insurance or Pet Savings Accounts. As a Pet Parent: How can you provide the best care for your pets without breaking the bank?

Pet Insurance and Pet Savings Accounts

Pet Insurance and Pet Savings Accounts

By planning ahead. Unless you have the money and discipline to set aside a savings account for pet emergencies, pet insurance is the best way to plan for future accidents and illnesses. While people insure their cars, homes, and jewelry, few pet parents insure their loving pets. Ironic isn’t it?

Many pet parents encounter hardships when their beloved pets become ill. Not only do they face the stress of dealing with their pet’s illness, pet parents have the added stress of dealing with the cost of their pet’s care.  Many people are forced to make decisions based on the cost of the medical care. Even under the watchful care of their pet parents, accidents happen and it is our responsibility as pet parents to anticipate and prepare for the unexpected. Pet insurance is an easy way to plan for those unforeseen events.

Pet insurance works by reimbursing pet parents for covered medical expenses. Unlike HMO’s for people, these companies allow you to chose any veterinarian. You are responsible for paying your bill and then submitting a claim form. The deductible, reimbursement amount, and coverage depends upon the company and specific policy you choose. Some plans offer basic coverage which covers only accidents, while others provide more comprehensive coverage which covers medical illness such as kidney disease, bladder infections, and even cancer. There are additional riders that provide additional coverage, and even wellness care plans to cover routine care. Monthly premiums can be as low as $10 per month for basic coverage or up to $50-75 per month for more comprehensive plans. I recommend obtaining coverage soon as possible. Many pet insurance premiums take into account your pet’s age and become more expensive and harder to obtain the older they get. Also, young animals tend to be more accident prone and may need the coverage provided by insurance sooner than you think.

If you are opposed to the idea of paying monthly premiums to insure your pets, I recommend starting a pet savings account. Set aside as much as you can afford and commit to making monthly contributions until you reach the amount of coverage you wish to provide. This pet savings account will act as your pet’s insurance plan and should only be used for pet emergencies. But,in order for this approach to work, you need to be very self-disciplined and put money away on a regular basis. However, the account may not have accumulated enough money if it has to be used too soon. That is why Pet Insurance is the Best alternative.

Planning for Pet Emergencies: Having Pet Insurance or Pet Savings Accounts

Regardless of whether you buy pet insurance or start a pet savings account, as a responsible pet parent, you need to prepare for the unexpected. By taking these steps today, you can ensure that if an accident happens or your pet becomes ill, you can focus your attention on their immediate health concerns and not worry about how you are going to pay for it.

If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.
